Cloning

Categories: Tech, Ethics/Morals

You go to an ATM and withdraw money. You put in your card, you type in your PIN, and you get your cash. A few days later, you start to notice that more money has been drawn out of your account. You notice ATM withdrawals around town and purchases at local businesses.

You’ve become a victim of fraud. Or...you've got a Jekkyl and Hyde thing going on.

But, assuming it's fraud, how did the criminal get your payment information? It’s likely that they used a process known as cloning.

Using sophisticated software technology, a criminal can copy the data from a credit card or debit card and write payment information to a different card. Cards that have Chip and PIN technology have largely solved the problem of cloning, also known as skimming.
