Common Core Standards

Language, Kindergarten

Language L.K.2.C

Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds (phonemes).

Sounding out letters (like in kindergarten Reading: Foundational Skills) isn't usually as hard as lettering out sounds, or, you know, spelling. But no need to get caught up in spelling out whole words just yet. With this standard, students should have a basic idea of what letters stand for what sounds, and be able to write 'em out when they hear individual phonemes.
