Common Core Standards
Grade 6
Language L.6.1
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
This standard might sound really self-explanatory at first, but a look into the sub-standards tells us otherwise. According to the Common Core, these are examples of what it means to be English good:
1. Don't do things like end sentences with "to I."
2. Be able to use intensive pronouns yourself. (See what we just did there?)
3. Don't accidentally refer to Richard as a her after spending an entire page calling him a him.
4. If there's a sentence that starts with "Jess and Mary," you know to be extra cautious when a "her" pops up.
5. Keep on improving on your English skills.
Notice how there are a ton of asterisks by some of the sub-standards? That just means students will have to keep on practicing that skill past sixth grade.
And there you have it. Keep on English-ing good!
If your students need to brush up on their spelling and grammar, send 'em over to our Grammar Learning Guides so they can hone their skills before conquering the Common Core.
