Use a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root (e.g., company, companion).

This substandard is similar to the previous one (L.3.4.B), but students are looking at the root word to figure out the meaning of a word. That root word can make or break complete understanding. Put this with context clues, and they're bound to nail the meaning every time.
