Grade 3
Language L.3.3.B
Recognize and observe differences between the conventions of spoken and written standard English.
If we spoke the way we wrote, we'd sound stilted and unnatural. Give plenty of examples of vernacular—from differing communities—and show how language shifts with different audiences. Help students rewrite vernacular usage into more standard forms—and vice versa—and practice will bring this substandard into focus.
