We live in a litigious society. It just takes one or two major malpractice suits to send a doctor's career on a downward spiral of debt and notoriety. It helps, of course, if you know your stuff and take the utmost care of all of your patients, but there are no guarantees.

As for the job outlook, it's good. Proctologists aren't going anywhere anytime soon. (Although they may not be called "proctologists" much longer; already, the preferred term has become "colorectal surgeon.")
