It's not enough to be awesome—you have to stay that way. Once you're established and your superiors like the work that you do, they'll prefer to stick with who they know than look elsewhere for other talent.
So, again—try to be in a continual state of awesomeness. If you're one of those editors working for a publisher who still prints physical material, you'd be wise to start learning on the side all about online media. That way, when your paper goes under…you won't.
