Fame
The level of fame for a defense engineer is virtually nil. There are a small group of people within the DoD who will know and admire the work that a defense engineer does but, as the security clearance level increases, the less an engineer is able to talk about or be acknowledged for their work. It can be a thankless position if major recognition is what a person needs.
