The nice thing about puzzle construction? Anyone can join the club. Are you a pre-med student, moonlighting as a train conductor? A grandpa who keeps a pencil in the bathroom so he can scratch clues on toilet paper? A four-time geography bee champ who collects trivia like a lint roller picks up dog hair? Come on in.

College can boost your puzzling skills by honing your writing and introducing new ideas, but it's kind of hard to find a major in puzzles. Unless you create your own, like Will Shortz did (source). The only requirements for crossword construction are a thirst for knowledge and a good thesaurus/search engine combo. Patience is also a bonus, as you scratch out yet another failed idea for 10 across. And you have to be good at counting, too. You won't make any friends if you allow only eleven boxes for "overcapacity."
