Bucknell University

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • While the U.S. job market remains grim for many grads, I'm getting graduates jobs—good ones. I like to think that my epic business and economics programs have something to do with that.

  • Promoting awareness. If someone needs help, I'll show up to march in solidarity, be an ally, or bring in donations.

  • Engineering. I've got one of the highest-ranking undergraduate engineering programs in the country, and I've got the 3D printers to prove it.

  • Bowling. It's not just for birthday parties—the fraternities love a good bowling night. Don't be surprised to find yourself attending frat formals at the alley.

  • Psychology. I want to get into your head, in all the best ways. And then I want to write a research paper and help the medical community understand the human mind a little bit better.

  • Foliage and autumnal sunsets. I dare you to find any place prettier than me in the fall.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A morning news source. People here are very tuned in—plus, you'll want to know what's going on when Tuesday night trivia rolls around.

  2. A Fracket. You wouldn't want to ruin that nice coat your grandma got you, would you? If you're going to a big party, you'll want a "fracket," a.k.a. "frat jacket" and some "froots," a.k.a. "frat boots." Get 'em at Walmart so you won't be bummed when they get wrecked.

  3. A S'well water bottle is the trendy and nature-friendly way to stay hydrated. It fits great on a bike.

  4. The desire to be different. My students are more than just another face in the crowd.

  5. A coffee punch card from 7th Street Café. That 10th free coffee makes that late night in the library a little less torturous.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • I'm #10 on Business Insider's list, "24 Best Liberal Arts Colleges in America."

  • I'm #5 among liberal arts colleges for alumni median lifetime earnings.

  • I'm #5 in Newsweek's College Rankings for Most Beautiful Schools (2012)

  • None of my classes are taught by grad students. It's faculty or nothing.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

Tearing up the dance floor at a "register" frat house or at a "mixer" frat-owned downtown party house. Greek life governs my night life.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The first floor of the library. You won't get a lot of work done, but you'll hear all about last weekend's shenanigans.

  • The Terrace Room. With floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, this lunch venue is the hot spot to dine, do work, or catch up with friends.

  • The Caf (cafeteria). Caf sit for days.

  • Elizabeth's on Market Street. This upscale bistro with amazing salmon filet is usually limited to parents' weekends or serious, serious date nights.

  • Susquehanna River/dock. As you lay on the dock, drink in hand, remember to wave to students floating down the river on blown up air mattresses.

Quirks:

  • More than 45% of my junior class studies abroad, ranking me in the top five in liberal arts colleges in terms of numbers of students who study abroad.

  • Professors welcome undergrads to do research with them. If you're really lucky, you might get to help a science prof chop rats' heads off or—wait, where are you going?

  • With a student faculty ratio of 9:1, I'm ranked as one of the best schools in terms of instructional attention.

  • My passionate alumni love me. When I reach out, they respond.

Famous Alumni:

  • Gary Sheinbaum, the CEO of Tommy Hilfiger

  • Sunil Gulati, President of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF)

  • Edward Herrmann, spokesperson, screenwriter, and actor

  • Kenneth Langone, co-founder of Home Depot

  • Leslie Moonves, President and CEO of CBS Corporation.
