The number "square root of 35" is between which of the following numbers?

00:12

And here are the potential answers...

00:14

Before we spoil the ending and kill all the drama... why not hit pause and try to solve this one yourself first?

00:22

So what's this question asking?

00:24

Well, really just whether we have a clue as to the relative size or scale of squares and roots.

00:32

Easy to brute force this one.

00:34

Look at the potential answers.

00:36

Try squaring 3 -- it's 9.

00:38

Square 4 -- its 16... so, nope.

00:42

The square root of 16 is less than the square root of 35, because 16 is less than 35.

00:48

Try B.

00:49

We know we need a much bigger 2nd number... so square 5.

00:52

It's still not bigger than 35...5 squared is just 25.

00:56

So now try 6 in C -- it's 36 -- voila. Answer C.

01:02

Because 36 is greater than 35, we know that the square root of 35 is less than the square root of 36.

01:10

Of course, this problem could get much more complicated if we were using... extensions.
