A partial nuclear meltdown took place in Pennsylvania at Three Mile Island on this day in 1979. In a weird coincidence, the movie The China Syndrome, in which a TV news crew secretly records a huge accident at a nuclear power plant, was released just twelve days before. The film's star, Jane Fonda, became a fierce lobbyist against nuclear power. Meanwhile, the TMI-2 reactor, which was the source of the catastrophe, took close to a billion dollars and fourteen years to clean up, and has been shut down ever since. Talk about a hot mess.
