What do swimsuits have to do with atoms? A lot, if we're talking about the bikini, which made its debut in Paris on this day in 1946. The skimpy suit was named after the Bikini Atoll, a.k.a. the Pacific island where America tested the atomic bomb. Both the press and the public were scandalized by the bathing suit because it—gasp!—left a woman's belly button visible.
