The French film version, Vu du Pont, ends with Eddie killing himself. Miller actually wrote a version of the play for the Paris production that ended this way as well. (Source)

Miller was inspired to write this play based on a true story he had heard of a Red Hook longshoreman who had called Immigration Services on his wife's cousins in order to prevent his niece from marrying on of them. The real-life version of the story ended with Catherine plunging an ice pick into Eddie's throat while he was asleep. Miller didn't learn this until years later, though. (Source)
