Character Role Analysis

Mrs. Grose

Good old Mrs. Grose plays the role of the levelheaded sidekick—a sort of Watson to the Governess's Sherlock Holmes.

She believes the Governess instantly, and often has quite good ideas to contribute to the women's detective work. She serves many different purposes; she provides key information about Quint and Miss Jessel, and about the background of their relationships with the children, while she also eggs on the Governess, and assists her in trying to figure out what to do about the whole ghost situation.
