Character Role Analysis

Long John Silver

Long John Silver is a murderer, thief, and con man. He's clever, cunning, and experienced. He leads a secret pirate rebellion and arranges to trick both Squire Trelawney and Jim. Even after all the other pirates are killed or marooned, Long John Silver escapes with both his life and a sack of gold coins. He's such a good villain that we here at Shmoop were pretty glad to see him get away, in spite of all his crimes.

A lot of our character comparisons appear in our character analyses for this novel, so we're going to send you to another part of the module to read more about Treasure Island's various foils.
