Character Analysis
Juozas is the guy Alena Jasaityte is engaged to in the first chapter of the novel. He pulls in a pretty good salary pushing handtrucks at one of the meatpacking plants, so he dresses well and thinks a lot of himself. Alena is not married to Juozas by Chapter 27, so something must have happened to him. We don't know what, and it doesn't really matter – given all the other stories in this novel, we are sure that it was horrible.
