Mrs. Allison

Character Analysis

Mrs. Allison is Jeannine's co-worker at the public library. We don't learn very much about her other than that she's African-American and knowledgeable about global politics. She seems to be introduced simply so that the narrator can identify her as "a Negro" (1.2.2)—a phrase that suggests that in Jeannine's world, race relations have not progressed very far.
