Character Role Analysis

Sebastian, Antonio, and Alonso, working together in antagonistic harmony

Sebastian, Antonio, and Alonso propel the action of the play along by their ill deeds, often contrary to the natural order. Alonso allowed Antonio to create the main conflict in the play—namely, the exile of Prospero—in order that Prospero can right what is wrong. Sebastian would murder his own brother, which is its own can of worms, and Antonio, already a usurper, is constantly encouraging Sebastian to steal the throne of Naples.
