Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge

The Soho Weekly News once published the theory that famous postmodernist author Thomas Pynchon, author of Gravity's Rainbow, was in fact the same person as J.D. Salinger. Pynchon wrote in to say that he was not, in fact, J.D. Salinger, but that it was a "nice try" and the SoHo folks should keep guessing. Salinger was engaged in an ugly legal battle with his ex-lover and daughter who published memoirs that were less-than-kind to him. (Source: Paul Alexander, Salinger: A Biography)

Salinger used to date Oona O'Neill, the daughter of famous playwright Eugene O'Neill. Oona ended up married to Charlie Chaplin, though. (Source: Jane Scovell, Oona Living in the Shadows: A Biography of Oona O'Neill Chaplin. Grand Central Publishing, 1999)
