Character Role Analysis

Madame Defarge

This one’s tricky. Madame Defarge moves from righteous revolutionary to vengeful, bloodthirsty villain without even batting an eyelash. It is a bit more complicated than this, of course: if your whole family had been ripped apart, wouldn’t you want to smack some heads together? Madame Defarge’s sense of justice may be irrational, but it’s certainly understandable.

She’s an antagonist, though, because she doesn’t have a single ounce of compassion in her entire body. Even perfect Lucie and her innocent child are fair game. It’s this wide-reaching hatred that makes her so… antagonistic.
