Poe Dameron

We apologize to Mr. Dameron for referring to him as a sidekick because if anyone was ever the hero of his own story, it's this guy.

But The Force Awakens isn't his story.

He's just along for the ride, there to help out when he can and blow up those pesky Starkiller Bases while the protagonists are off being heroic. They probably think of him as a "partner" more than anything, but if we're going by the strict definition, yeah, it's the sidekick's lounge for him.

Chewie and the Droids

Chewie and the Droids. It sounds like the name of a band.

But, in point of fact, these guys were always the stalwart sidekicks for the movies' heroes. The Force Awakens adds BB-8 to the mix, but the rest of them—Chewie, R2, and C-3PO—are doing what they always do by keeping the good guys company and doing those jobs that the main characters are just a little too harried to take care of themselves.
