Character Analysis
Plucky little Arthur doesn't have a huge role in this book, but he's a pretty interesting cat. He's the youngest of the Morel children, and probably the most like Walter. As the narrator informs us, "He was very pretty, with a mop of gold curls, and he loved his father from the first" (3.21).
As with the other kids, though, Arthur eventually loses this affection for Walter. He also has a really short temper, lacks discipline, and can't stand being told what to do. Or, in other words:
He was a quick, careless, impulsive boy, a good deal like his father. He hated study, made a great moan if he had to work, and escaped as soon as possible to his sport again. (6.1)
When Arthur joins the army, we all know this is a terrible move. But hey, the guy actually does a half-decent job making the best of a bad situation, and we have to give him props for that.
