Character Role Analysis

Protagonist

Protagonist: Carrie

C'mon, the title has her name in it—of course she's the book's protagonist. Okay, maybe that's not a foolproof way of determining who a protagonist is, but here it works. Seriously, though, we're following Carrie from the moment she's on the train on her way to Chicago until the very end of the novel when she becomes a (lonely and unhappy) Broadway star. We root for her to succeed, get frustrated with her inability to ever be happy, and sometimes fear for her.
