How It All Goes Down
- Ma and Dolores continue their mom/teenage daughter bickering every morning before school.
- Dolores lets Jack borrow her fan one night and stays to talk to him.
- He's flirty and ticklish and aggressive… and ten years older than she is.
- He asks her "how good are you at keeping secrets?" (1.6.75), and then he tells her that Rita is pregnant, but she can't tell anyone because she's had two miscarriages already.
- When he starts tickling her again, and climbing on top of her, Dolores starts crying and trying to get away.
- She takes responsibility for it, calling herself an "idiot" (1.6.105) and leaves.
- The next morning, he offers to take her to school and she gets in the car with him.
- He calls her Dolores del Rio and says she's prettier than all the girls who bully her; then he confirms that she hasn't told anyone his secret about Rita. Dolores hasn't.
- At school, she makes friends with a girl who smokes named Norma French, and that afternoon, when Jack drives her home, Dolores takes a puff of his cigarette.
