Character Analysis
Catherine Adler is Wilhelm's younger sister. She's forty years old and married to a court reporter who seems to always be down on his luck, kind of like Wilhelm. What is it with this family?
Like Wilhelm, Catherine is "big and fair-haired" (2.33). Also like her brother, she took "a professional name" when she decided to pursue life as an artist. Unlike Wilhelm, who went into acting, "Philippa" is "ambitious to become a painter" (2.33). Also unlike Wilhelm, Catherine completed her education. She has a Bachelor of Science, and worked as an anesthetist at Mount Sinai before she got married (2.32).
Recently, Catherine has been asking her father for financial support. She wants to rent out a gallery so that she can show her paintings, and it would be a lot easier if her father would cough up some dough. Not surprisingly, Dr. Adler has refused her, just as he refuses Wilhelm's not-so-subtle hints for help with his child support and rent. Looks like Daddy Warbucks isn't gonna deliver to either of his offspring this time around. Sorry kids.
