Ma Timeline & Summary

  • Ma makes her son, Jack, a cake and gives him a drawing for his fifth birthday.
  • They continue their days like they have every day for the last five years: they bathe, eat, play, and sleep inside Room.
  • At night, Ma hides Jack in a wardrobe and has to sleep with Old Nick. One night he hurts her because Jack scares him with a remote-controlled Jeep.
  • When Ma discovers that Old Nick has lost his job, she's afraid he will abandon her and Jack, and they will starve to death.
  • Ma decides to tell Jack the truth: she was kidnapped seven years ago by Old Nick. She wants to go back to the real world.
  • Ma spends days thinking up a plan to escape before deciding on a good plan: Jack will pretend to be dead, she'll roll him up in a rug, and she'll have Old Nick bury him.
  • The plan works. Ma's a great actress and Old Nick believes her. He carries her son away.
  • The cops come to rescue Ma within a few hours. She's free for the first time in seven years.
  • It's hard readjusting to real life. Ma has to deal with new technology, her own mother's divorce, and the fact that many of her friends have moved on.
  • Ma gives an interview to a TV talk show host. Although she's confident on the air, she begins to doubt her abilities to do this, and she purposely ODs on sleeping pills.
  • Jack goes to stay at with his grandma while Ma recovers.
  • When Ma recovers, she moves Jack into an apartment with just her.
  • One day, she agrees to let Jack see Room one more time. With Jack, she says goodbye to that horrible part of her life.
