Adrian isn't a one-dimensional love interest. For a masculine movie about a man trying to be a championship boxer, she has a surprisingly complex character… just one of the many reasons why Rocky is such a great flick.

But "romantic interest" is still the role she ultimately fills. Rocky would fill the same role for her, if the film were called Adrian instead of Rocky. Her role is the most important, because Rocky doesn't even win the fight against Apollo. But he doesn't care, because he wins Adrian's heart.
