Character Role Analysis
John of Gaunt
John of Gaunt advises Richard to change his ways in hopes that he can reverse some of the damage Richard has done to the kingdom. Unfortunately, Richard refuses to listen. When Gaunt dies, Richard doesn't give him a second thought. Instead, he depends on the lousy counsel he's given by his brown-nosing advisors – Bushy, Bagot, and Green – whose advice is based on their own selfish desires.
Brain Snack: The historical Richard II was only 10 years old when he became King of England in 1377, and his uncles (like Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester) were always trying to boss him around and tell him how to rule. Richard didn't appreciate being bullied and likely had his uncle Gloucester killed.
