The Poor Young Duke

Character Analysis

The poor young duke, whom the narrator mentions, was apparently the last person who tried to spend the night in the red room. Like the narrator who admires him, his aim was to prove that room wasn’t haunted. He didn’t end well: he died by falling down the spiral staircase at the entrance of the red room. The custodians blame his death on the haunted room, but the narrator thinks it was apoplexy.
