Guide Mentor
Character Role Analysis
Jean Tarrou
Tarrou may not always convince Rieux of his philosophies, but their conversations force the doctor to think in ways he otherwise might not have. In this way, Tarrou implicitly guides the doctor – or maybe even guides himself. Thoughts aside, at the very least, Tarrou is the one to instigate the volunteer teams; he is the one to incite Rieux to fight against the plague; and no doubt his companionship keeps the doctor going in the long months of suffering.
