Character Analysis
Henrietta lives mostly in the shadow of her more forceful older sister. Her waffling over whether to stick with Charles Hayter or abandon him to go after Wentworth gives her sister an excuse to show off her determination to Wentworth and win his favor. By the end of the novel, she’s happy with her position as the future Mrs. Charles Hayter, and talks of nothing else but the concerns that are significant to him. Her lack of any substantial individual character also casts a dim light on Wentworth’s post-Anne taste in women, who for a time flirts with her as much as with her sister.
