• Jamie, having been shot and stabbed in battle, is nursed back to health by a mysterious young woman named Claire.
• At Castle Leoch, Jamie takes the punishment of a young girl named Laoghaire; he's pretty chivalrous, taking her beating just to protect her reputation.
• He grows closer to Claire, telling her about his family (both parents are dead), the scars on his back (from a whipping by the cruel English captain Jonathan Randall), and his hopes and fears (to get married even though he's a penniless commoner).
• To protect Claire from Randall, who is pursuing her, Jamie agrees to marry her.
• What does he get out of the deal? Well, to lose his virginity for one thing.
• They have sex. A lot.
• During one of their dalliances by a river, two thugs almost kill them; Jamie feels guilty for failing to protect Claire.
• Later, Claire tries to escape and gets captured by Randall. Jamie risks his life and the life of his men, to save her.
• Then he punishes her for disobeying his orders by whipping her. He kind of likes it; so does she.
• After Claire is almost burned at the stake for being a witch, they flee to his estate, Lallybroch.
• He reunites with his sister, Jenny, but gets captured by the English guard.
• Held prisoner at Wentworth Prison, Jamie is tortured and raped by Jonathan Randall, and though Claire saves him, the damage is severe.
• She fixes his broken hand, but the emotional damage from the rape is almost impossible to recover him.
• He rests at an Abbey in France, and almost dies, but Claire is able to save him yet again.
• At the hot springs under the Abbey, Jamie learns that his wife is pregnant.
