The Old Man, or Santiago

No doubt here. The old man is clearly the protagonist. Partly because we have no one else to choose from (the sea turtles were weak contenders), but mostly because we’re inside his head, we spend a ton of time watching him, we feel sympathetic towards him, and his character development drives the story.
