Peyton Farquhar

There's not much competition for good ol' Peyton in the protagonist race. He is the only character with a name and background information. We get to hear his thoughts and know his feelings and perhaps sympathize with him (it's hard to not feel a little bit bad for someone with a rope around his neck).
