Character Analysis
Mr. Torry is a wealthy young man who lives in St. Ogg’s. He represents the sort of gender prejudice that Maggie suffers after she returns from her failed elopement with Stephen. Torry cruelly mocks Maggie on the street after she returns, treating her very disrespectfully:
[Maggie saw] young Torry step out a little with his glass at his eye, and bow to her with that air of nonchalance which he might have bestowed on a friendly bar-maid. Maggie’s pride was too intense for her not to feel that sting. (7.2.6)
This type of behavior is unfortunately something Maggie has to deal with a lot after her scandal with Stephen.
