Character Role Analysis

Elizabeth-Jane

Elizabeth-Jane is the moral center of the novel. She's naturally intelligent and perceptive. She occasionally takes it upon herself to warn other characters when she thinks they are in some kind of need: she guides her mother as they travel to Casterbridge, she warns Farfrae when she thinks Henchard is plotting against him, and she advises Lucetta to remain single rather than break her word.
