Françoise

Character Analysis

Françoise is Art’s wife. She has converted to Judaism in order to appease Vladek. In the story, Françoise serves as a kind of sounding board for Art’s ideas, questioning and challenging at times, supportive in others. Born French, Françoise is not the child of Holocaust survivors. Her response to Art’s ideas is a way for the many readers who may not share Art's background to relate to the text.
