- On her way to see Nefret, Zoey hears Nefret's cat, Skylar, hissing and growling in a certain direction. Zoey peers inside the alcove and sees Aphrodite sitting there, the whites of her eyes showing.
- Aphrodite must be having a vision. Zoey assumes that she's being a hateful hag about it, and doesn't want anyone to know about the vision so that no one can prevent whatever disaster it is from happening.
- Zoey half-carries Aphrodite to Nefret's office. Aphrodite spasms and raves about blood, people who are dead but not, and tunnels; when Aphrodite screams, Zoey scrams when Nefret tells her to.
- After Zoey's classes, her four friends gang up on her and tell her that they want to come with her to the ritual. She refuses and stomps off.
- Later, Zoey is pacing and brooding. Nala begins to growl, and Zoey sees… Elliott. He looks solid, though, not like a ghost at all, but his eyes are red and creepy looking, and somehow he has fangs. Same bad smell as Elizabeth.
- Elliott tells Zoey that he will have her, and he comes at her. Nala attacks, and then Elliott jumps the wall and runs away. Freaky.
- Zoey thinks of telling Nefret, but some instinct inside her says not to, so instead she gets dressed to go to the ritual, even though she feels totally unnerved.
