Despite the fact that he was gay, Auden got married to a woman and stayed with her for over thirty years. He married Erika Mann (the daughter of author Thomas Mann) so that she could escape Nazi Germany. It was a marriage of convenience and they never lived together, but they remained friends until Mann's death. (Source)
