The only other character in "The Lady with the Dog," Anna fills the role of our protagonist's romantic interest. Indeed, when she is first introduced in the story, this is all he sees in her – a possible sexual conquest. As the narrative continues, however, Anna fills a more meaningful role as Gurov's true and only love.
