1 John 3:16 is sometimes mistaken for what's probably the most famous verse in the whole Bible, John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life." We can see the confusion. 1 John 3:16 says, "We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another." Pretty similar, eh? Of course, this is all a great big coincidence, since Bible passages weren't numbered for hundreds of years after they were written. (Source)
