Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss)’s Timeline and Summary

Hooper arrives on the island amid the chaos of the shark hunt, meets Brody, performs Chrissie Watkins' autopsy, and suspects that the tiger shark is not the culprit.
He convinces Brody to cut open the tiger shark, confirming his suspicions. Both go out on Hooper's boat and discover Ben Gardner's boat, revealing that they're dealing with a great white.
He tries and fails to help Brody convince Vaughn to close the beaches and witnesses the pond attack the next day.
He goes out on the Orca with Quint and Brody. Quint is dismissive and insulting from the get-go, and Hooper starts to lose his patience. His scientific sensibility threatens to interfere with the hunt, but he manages to do his job as a crewmember.
He and Quint bond over their scars (and a few drinks), but the shark interrupts bro time and begins its incremental assault on the Orca.
Hooper tries to fix the boat and keep it in working order, but Quint ignores his warnings about the engine and the Orca is soon crippled.
Seeing no other way, Hooper goes down in the shark cage to try to poison the shark. The shark destroys the cage and Hooper loses his weapon, but he manages to flee to the ocean floor.
He resurfaces after the shark's death and paddles back to Amity with Brody.
