Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge
Outside of the gospels, the only verses in the New Testament that mention Hell are James 3:6 and 2 Peter 2:4. Surprised? Most people are.
According to the Acts of Peter (another early Christian book that doesn't appear in the Bible), Peter was walking along when Jesus appeared to him on the road and let him know he was going be crucified in Rome. 1 Peter seems to agree with this account. Peter says, "I know that my death will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me." Oh, and he was definitely right about the death thing.
Jude 1:14-15 quotes from an ancient Jewish tale that's sometimes known as the Book of Enoch. Though none of the stories that were attributed to Enoch show up in the Bible, they were still plenty popular among certain 1st-century Jewish folks. Hey, who can resist a story about the destruction of the world?
