The Aleuts

The big nasties in this novel are clearly the Aleutian hunters who kill all of the cute, playful otters and, what's worse, kill Karana's father. It's their violence and their destructive treatment of the island that Karana must heal and fix. She does this through her friendships with Rontu and Tutok, who are Aleutians that do not buy into the violence of the hunters.
