When he wasn't hating on Capote, Capote's frenemy, the famous author Norman Mailer, called Perry Smith one of the greatest characters in literature. Mailer published his own nonfiction novel, The Executioner's Song, about the mass murderer Gary Gilmore, who was executed in Utah. He and Capote ended up fighting for the rest of their lives about who was the real creator of the new genre of "literary journalism," especially since Mailer won a Pulitzer Prize for The Executioner's Song.
