- Reagan begins by addressing his audience and giving a shout-out to Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the leader of West Germany, and to Governing Mayor Eberhard Diepgen of West Berlin.
- He also brings up JFK's famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" visit to the city in 1963; gives a nod to Nixon and Carter, the two U.S. presidents who visited the city in the meantime; and reminds the audience that this is his second presidential trip to West Berlin.
- The Prez then gives some props to the culture and history of Berlin, which was celebrating its 750th anniversary.
- He references two of Berlin's most famous and unofficial theme songs: "Berliner Luft" by Paul Lincke, and Marlene Dietrich's "Ich hab' noch einen Koffer in Berlin" ("I Still Have a Suitcase in Berlin").
- He also mentions a couple of West Berlin's most notable attractions: the super-picturesque Grunewald Forest and the Tiergarten public park.
- We learn that this speech is being broadcast throughout the Western world and that it will also be heard in parts of East Germany, which is a BFD because of all the media censorship going on at the time.
- Reagan specifically tells his East German audience that his comments are for them too, and vocalizes his support for the reunification of the city.
