Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation: Just So We're Clear (Sentences 22-26) Summary

If It's War Japan Wants, FDR's Here To Make It Official

  • First, FDR says, he, Congress, and the American people are not going to sit idly by and let Japan's shenanigans go unanswered. No, one thing is for sure: the U S of A is all about defending itself.
  • And second, we may have tried to be all buddy-buddy with Japan, but that's over now.
  • The United States is never going to let "this form of treachery" happen again (22).
  • Friends don't sneak-attack friends' military installations.
  • Make no mistake, says Roosevelt: American people, territory, and interests are in danger. Those Japanese, they're out to get us.
  • But America's military might and super-determined people will win the day, "so help us God," Roosevelt says emphatically (25).
  • And with that, FDR officially asks Congress to declare war on Japan.
  • Spoiler alert: Congress said yes, and off to war we went.
