Character Role Analysis

Jig

Since Jig has a (nick)name and comes up with the title simile, we’ll call her the main character. Bonus: because the man seems manipulative, we tend to be on her side.

The American

The American and Jig speak about an equal number of lines. As noted, she gets to speak the title in one of her lines (and gets a nickname), but he gets to speak Spanish and translate. Plus, we follow him into the bar, leaving Jig alone for a moment. This suggests that the narrator is more closely following the man’s movements than Jig’s.
