The Villagers

Though the drowned man does take on a variety of "hero" roles in this story, we have to remember that he's dead. The real main characters and the real protagonists of this text are the villagers. They're also the ones who are changed throughout the course of the story, (always a good tip-off when you're looking for a protagonist).
